On September 26, about 200 faithful of the Society of St. Pius X (FSSPX) made their annual pilgrimage to the Canadian Martyrs’ Shrine in Midland, Ontario. Their published programme scheduled veneration of the relics at the Shrine at 3 p.m. The pilgrims were denied entrance to the church. According to LifeSiteNews.com, this was ordered by the Archdiocese of Toronto. The FSSPX has made this pilgrimage for years. In September 2025, more than 500 FSSPX pilgrims attended. In contrast to the denial of entry to the FSSPX pilgrims, in July 2026 the Archdiocese of Toronto advertised the annual Tamil pilgrimage at the same Shrine. Tonight, on the return flight from Metz to Rome, Pope Leo XIV was asked whether his remarks on euthanasia had crossed the boundary between religion and politics. Leo XIV replied: “I have not crossed that boundary.” When the Church speaks “in defense of life,” it is “not doing politics, but applying the Gospel to people’s lives.” And: “If this is doing politics, I did it; but I certainly did not intend to meddle in French politics. Pope Leo XIV spent nearly the entire cruise from Lourdes to Metz in the cockpit of Air France’s A321 — about 30 minutes. Copilot Érik Margueritte says the aviation-minded pope asked numerous questions about the aircraft and its systems. When two French Rafales flew alongside, the crew handed Leo the radio. He spoke directly to the fighter pilots, blessing them and military personnel working to protect people and promote peace worldwide.
