A WhatsApp post by an Italian bishop’s secretary showing Pride flags as a swastika sparked media coverage, prompting explanations from the secretary and two responses from his bishop. Forty years after the scandalous Assisi meeting of 1986, Pope Leo XIV will take part in its anniversary gathering. On October 27, Leo XIV will travel to Assisi for the 40th anniversary of the World Day of Prayer for Peace convened by Pope John Paul II in 1986. Back then, a Buddha statue was placed on the tabernacle. The 2026 gathering, titled “Disarmed and Disarming Peace,” will bring together 384 representatives of religions, cultures and institutions from 53 countries. Leo XIV will preside over the Christian prayer for peace in the Lower Basilica together with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, while representatives of other religions will pray separately in different locations to their idols. The religious leaders will then gather in the Piazza Inferiore outside the Basilica of Saint Francis for the concluding ceremony and message of peace.

A 17-year-old Dutch girl was killed by euthanasia after doctors concluded that she was experiencing “unbearable and hopeless psychological suffering”. Milou Verhoof died on 2 October 2023 after suffering from mental-health problems for years and undergoing repeated treatments. Her case was later examined by the Netherlands’ Regional Euthanasia Review Committees, which found that the doctor had complied with the country’s legal requirements for euthanasia. Because Milou was 17, her parents had to be involved in the decision-making process, although Dutch law did not require their consent. Her parents ultimately supported her "decision". The case later drew objections from fourteen doctors, mostly psychiatrists, who asked prosecutors to examine aspects of her euthanasia, including questions about her capacity to decide and possible influence from those around her. Pervert Jesuit finally laicised after decades of abuse. The Society of Jesus has expelled Spanish priest Francesc Peris, 84, from both the clerical state and the Jesuit order. A canonical penal process found him guilty of sexually abusing minors over several decades. However, Peris is cared for in a Jesuit residence. The punishment was announced on October 5. It comes more than two years after Peris himself admitted abusing minors. On May 7, 2024, the Jesuits publicly disclosed that Peris had “recently” acknowledged sexually abusing minors as far back as 1972. Yet when questioned by secular authorities in a Barcelona criminal investigation in October 2024, he denied the particular allegation being investigated. Peris was never convicted by a Spanish criminal court. Proceedings against him were ultimately closed because the alleged offences were considered time-barred. Bishop James Beckman of Knoxville, Tennessee, has revoked the faculties of Fr David Mary Engo who has associated himself with the Priestly Fraternity of St. Pius X (FSSPX), “He is not authorized to exercise public priestly ministry anywhere within the Diocese of Knoxville.” David Mary Engo was ordained a priest in 1997 by then-Bishop Seán P. O’Malley of Fall River, the future Cardinal of Boston. His religious and community status has a somewhat complicated history. He was incardinated into the Diocese of Fort Wayne–South Bend in 2010, while simultaneously being excardinated from the Diocese of Fall River, Massachusetts. Engo founded a Franciscan community in 2009, professed perpetual vows, and served as the community’s Minister General. In May 2017, he resigned as Minister General and withdrew to a hermitage.
