The University of Notre Dame's McGrath Institute for Church Life has published on July 17 a report containing twelve proposals for assessing candidates for the priesthood. Entitled, "Do You Know Them to Be Worthy?", the file was written by Father Thomas V. Berg and psychologist Timothy G. Lock. The report draws on research commissioned from the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA) and a consultation held at Notre Dame in September 2025. The proposals concern psychological assessment, candidates with particular psychological or developmental conditions, and formation for chastity and celibacy. It addresses candidates with conditions including ADHD, obsessive-compulsive disorder and autism spectrum disorder. On homosexual attraction, the Notre Dame authors note that a pause in formation may "more often than not" lead to a decision not to advance a candidate toward ordination. Slovak pro-LGBT Catholic priest Adam Štefanec, 29, of the Diocese of Žilina said in an August 12 video that he does not like the word “God.” Rev. Štefanec believes that the term had accumulated so many associations that it no longer speaks to people today. “I try to find words that are universal,” he said, naming “humanity” as a universal value. The mosaics by Marko Rupnik at the Sanctuary of Lourdes will be fully covered in the coming weeks and will remain hidden permanently after Pope Leo XIV’s visit, Bishop Jean-Marc Micas of Tarbes and Lourdes told French newspaper LaDepeche.fr on August 20. Only some of the mosaics, including those on the basilica’s doors, were covered in March 2025. The sanctuary had previously stopped illuminating Rupnik’s works during its nightly processions in 2024. Rupnik is a Slovenian priest and artist promoted by the Vatican for decades. He has been accused by around two dozen women of sexual, spiritual and psychological abuse. An ongoing canonical case concerning the allegations is being drawn out in the Vatican. The bishop who oversees the Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes in France has said the popular Catholic pilgrimage site will cover all of its mosaics by disgraced priest Father Marko Rupnik ahead of Pope Leo XIV’s visit next month.
